I know it is counter-intuitive, just 7 days before Christmas, to think of taking (or giving yourself) a break, however, it might just be the very best thing to do.

Please read on, and see if you agree…

Love, Honey

In Praise of Idleness

by Alexander Green

Americans idealize hard work, duty, industry and self-sacrifice.

We know this, in part, by how many terms we have for those who lack these qualities: loafer, idler, shirker, slacker, goof-off, deadbeat, bum, goldbrick, layabout.

As children, we’re taught that idle hands are the devil’s workshop. Idleness is synonymous with laziness – or worse.

But other cultures take a different view. The Japanese have the highly ritualized tea ceremony. The British have afternoon tea, a relaxing half hour with Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and genteel conversation.

Mexicans dispense with tea altogether and just take a siesta. (As the Spanish proverb says, “How beautiful it is to do nothing, and then rest afterwards.”)

Successful lives are not always measured by achievement. Too much time at the grindstone can leave us culturally impoverished, spiritually indigent. We should know how to cultivate leisure, to use it to rise to higher levels of grace and intellectual repose.

No sensible life is without periods of indolence. Besides, idleness can be a noble attribute, a virtuous pastime.

Consider that culture itself is a byproduct of leisure. Idleness leads to contemplation, creativity and inventiveness. These, in turn, resolve themselves in literature, poetry, music, philosophy and art.

Downtime is an energizing force, too. It clears our heads and gives us strength. Without it, our concentration is diminished, our immune systems are stressed, our reasoning skills are diminished. We get tired and cranky.

Idleness reflects our status as free men and women. It is an expression of liberty. True idleness is not doing nothing. It’s being free to do anything.

Yet in today’s society, indolence is hard work. Family will poke and prod you. Colleagues will try to motivate you. Even a night on the town comes crashing down when your companion utters those lamentable words, “I really ought to be going. I need to get an early start.”

Yet work is not always required. There is such a thing as sacred idleness.

Aristotle said, “The great-souled man will not compete for the common objects of ambition… He will be idle and slow to act.”

Mark Twain – whose characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are among the most resourceful loafers in all literature – once wrote, “I have seen slower people than I am – and more deliberate… and even quieter, more listless and lazier people than I am. But they were dead.”

Ronald Reagan, a master of inactivity, once remarked, “It’s true that hard work never killed anybody, but I figure why take the chance?”

Yet, once ingrained, it’s hard for many of us to break free from the Calvinist work ethic, to return to that natural and blessed state of inactivity. In short, we feel guilty.

But we shouldn’t. One can even argue that idleness has a divine sanction. In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin. And yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” (Matthew 6:28-29)

Hebrew sages even taught that when you are first welcomed into heaven, a record is revealed to you of all the many times in your past when you could really have been happy and enjoyed some moment but failed to do so. And then you are called to repent of each and every one of those moments.

The best lives are not lived in a hurry. Why pursue wealth if not to purchase a bit of leisured contentment? After all, the great end of living is the true enjoyment of it.

Winston Churchill understood this. British historian Paul Johnson recalls the time as a boy when he met the Prime Minister in October 1946:

“He gave me one of his giant matches he used for lighting cigars. I was emboldened by that into saying, ‘Mr. Winston Churchill, sir, to what do you attribute your success in life?’ and he said without hesitating: ‘Economy of effort. Never stand up when you can sit down, and never sit down when you can lie down.’”

And with that, he stepped into his limo and pulled away.

Carpe Diem,

Alex

Another beautiful day in paradise (this one has snow)!

I am so grateful for the beautiful and loving birthday wishes; they have filled me right to the brim with joy.

We are home, enjoying the winter wonderland of Santa Fe, and getting back into the swing of work and now the holidays.

Speaking of the holidays — please do yourself a favor and don’t get caught up in overdoing; overspending, overeating, overdrinking, you get my drift. Commit to making it a conscious and joyous time for yourself and those you love.

Here’s a brief process you might find useful (do not practice while driving) …

Find a quiet space.
Allow your eyes to close.
Take a few deep breaths.
Begin to envision the rest of the month the way you’d like it to be– see what is happening, who is there, what are you doing, where are you?
Are you volunteering?
Entertaining at your place?
Visiting others?
Shopping/wrapping/giving?
Attending parties?
Enjoying quiet time at home?

Pay attention to what pleases you, what brings you joy.
Continue to breathe deeply as you see and feel the richness of the holidays, the way you want them.

When you are ready, open your eyes and begin doing what it takes to create and enjoy the holidays you envision.

It won’t happen by accident, so stay conscious and bring it into being.

It’s My Birthday Tomorrow and We’re Celebrating!

We are on vacation in Mazatlan, enjoying the sunshine and good company of friends and family, and taking advantage of abundant opportunities to enjoy life. Yesterday we went on an exciting zipline tour (one more item off our Bucket Lists), and tomorrow we celebrate my birthday.

I am filled with gratitude for the wonderful life I enjoy, and how much better, richer, deeper it is than the one I lived before I made The Experience a part of MY experience in 1979. My trajectory shifted in that weekend, and I am in a very different place today than I would have been had I not trusted myself to attend and take to heart the principles and transformation available there.

As we enter the holiday season, there is no better time to embrace and invest in gifts that last a lifetime, for yourself and for those you love.

It is so easy to get caught up in buying the newest gadget or whatever else is being promoted this week (I am blissfully unaware of TV and print ads on vacation), and ending up in the new year with an empty pocketbook and no sense of enrichment.

To make it easier to take advantage of these life-changing opportunities, we are offering a holiday special.

Until the 11th of December only, give yourself an extra discount off the already-low price for events and personal support geared toward YOU and your successful life. Naturally, they are excellent gifts for those you love, too.

We don’t get home from Mazatlan until the night of the 7th, and I want you to have a few days after I return to take advantage of the holiday special, just in case you have questions. I have poor internet connection here, and no phone access, so can’t count on receiving communications reliably until I am home.

Now is the time to make a fresh start for 2010, to open to new possibilities, to add to the beauty and quality of your life, and even to share those gifts with those you love.

Please do not miss this opportunity.

The Experience, March 26-29, in Santa Fe

Experience YOUR Power — when you’re ready to live at 100%!

The Experience is an in-depth journey into a more powerful, expansive, and joyous life. If you’ve never done any work with us, you’ll want to begin with this seminar.

You’ll gain tools and experiences that help you be more loving of yourself and others; you’ll let go of the old baggage from the past; and you’ll learn to trust yourself to come out in all ways so you can live your very best life.

You’ll create heartfelt connections, improve your self-esteem, deepen your sense of spirit, and feel a richer sense of personal power.

And when you go home, you’ll have tools to operate on a higher plane, creating more success in every area of your life

It’s time to start designing the life you choose, and stop simply reacting to what comes your way.

Whatever you want more (or less) of in your life, The Experience can help. Once you start naturally expanding your consciousness and understanding more about how to achieve the results you choose with awareness and intention, there is no end to what you can accomplish.

Here’s one report:

“I’m working at the Academy Awards this week and life is exciting and busy. I apply your material each and every day. IT WORKS!”
—-Gregory Lehr, California

Maybe you’d like to know more about yourself and what makes you tick:

“The Experience is a great tool for learning more about the way we process emotions and how to empower yourself to take control of those emotions in order to live a full and happy life.”
—Libby Terrell, Georgia

Maybe you are interested in creating richer, more satisfying relationships:

“The Experience motivated me to bravely tread up to a personal precipice, take stock and make the changes necessary for happiness and love in my life. I ended a non productive and obligatory relationship, and gained a new comfort with myself and a trust in my decisions. What followed for me is the healthiest and happiest relationship with a life partner who shares a vision of self actualization, community service, wellness and fun.”
—- Atma Wiseman, New Mexico

Or you may be ready for expansion with no particular agenda:

“I didn’t know what to expect-I just went with an open mind and an open heart. I left with a more enriched and a very enlightening “consciousness” of who I am. More importantly, I learned valuable tools that I can use right away to start living better.”
– Margie Archer, Georgia

That’s just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what you can achieve in The Experience.

Service and giving are natural expressions of expanding consciousness and powerful living. These thoughts from Deepak Chopra are good to keep in mind:

Charity has always been a part of every spiritual tradition, and learning to give is an essential part of everyone’s inner growth. However, charity has a dirty little secret that few of us want to face. It can fail or backfire. Our gifts can be squandered. A dollar given with compassion may wind up lining the pockets of someone who doesn’t deserve it.

It’s a healthy sign that the public has become more aware of these drawbacks. Yet we have to be careful to ward off cynicism. To stop giving would be the wrong choice.

Here’s how I empower my own giving while at the same time bringing the compassionate gift closer to the right receiver.

First of all, fuel an aspiration. The most hopeless people in the world aren’t the poorest; they’re the ones who can never fulfill even a tiny dream. As a group, women are the largest population of the helpless, so I look to help them any way I can.

Invest in the future, which means directing your gift to young people.

Ask for accountability. Know exactly where your money is going, and demand progress reports.

Take advantage of the multiplier effect. The reason micro-financing has taken off like wildfire is that small loans to individuals to help them buy their own land or start their own businesses turn out to pay off handsomely. The businesses get started and flourish.

The loans are repaid quickly and thus multiply the effect of your gift. I participate in Start Fund, started by philanthropist Fred Matser of the Netherlands. But there are now many online resources for directing your gift into micro-financing.

Give generously of your spirit. If you can do this, money is secondary. Personal guidance, mentoring and encouragement happen on a one-to-one basis. If you can bring your spirit into contact with someone else’s, your gift can change a life.

These are simple, basic guidelines, but I believe in them wholeheartedly. I hope they come to mind the next time you get one of those annoying phone calls from a fast-talking, impersonal fundraiser who works for a cut of the money raised. There’s a better way to give, and it’s open to all of us.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Deepak Chopra.

I believe this article by Jack Canfield can help everyone enjoy more successful relationships. What do you think?

One of life’s fundamental truths states, “Ask and you shall receive.” As kids we get used to asking for things, but somehow we lose this ability in adulthood. We come up with all sorts of excuses and reasons to avoid any possibility of criticism or rejection. This is especially true when it comes to asking for opinions on our appearance, behavior, or performance. When is the last time you asked for a status report from a beloved or co-worker on your attitude, for example? How about a report card from a best friend? A grade on your parenting from your spouse or kids?

If you are not moving closer to what you want, you probably aren’t doing enough asking. And you’re probably not asking the single most important question that can help you achieve a higher level of success and personal fulfillment: How am I doing? This question can be asked in a variety of settings–at work, at home, with friends and colleagues, and even within yourself. The information you gather can be used to set new goals, refine your habits, and generally help you to make the improvements you know you need to make. Have faith that the person you ask will enjoy offering you truthful answers. After all, it’s an opportunity to enrich that relationship and exchange very personal insights. You may even find yourself answering the same question back at the other person.

How to Ask

Some people don’t enjoy the fruits of asking because they don’t ask effectively. If you use vague language you will not be clearly understood. Here are five ways to ensure that your asking gets results.

1) Ask Clearly
Be precise. Think clearly about your request. Take time to prepare. Use a note pad to pick words that have the greatest impact. Words are powerful, so choose them carefully. If you throw the “How am I doing?” question out without specifics, it may take time for the other person to understand what you’re getting at. Instead of being vague at the start, it may help to begin with a direct reference to exactly what topic you’re referring to. For example, if it’s your fitness habits, try “I really appreciate your thoughts on how I’m doing in my attempts to shape up physically. I’m hoping to drop a few pounds and eat better, but I’m wondering (since you’re my husband and you see me more than anybody else) how you think I’m doing?” Later on, you can add something like, “Where do you think I could be going wrong, or could be doing better?”

2) Ask with Confidence
People who ask confidently get more than those who are hesitant and uncertain. When you’ve figured out what you want to ask for, do it with certainty, boldness and confidence. Don’t be shy or feel intimidated by the experience. You may face some unexpected criticism, but be prepared for it with confidence. Try to have an open mind and heart. Don’t get defensive if you hear something you don’t like or that makes you uncomfortable. It’s good to get a little squirmy once in a while upon the observations of others. They will inspire you to stop, reflect, and take steps to make a lifestyle shift for the better.

3) Ask Consistently
Some people fold after making one timid request. They quit too soon. Keep asking until you find the answers. In prospecting there are usually four or five “no’s” before you get a “yes.” Top producers understand this. When you find a way to ask that works, keep on asking it. You may, for example, want to ask a co-worker about your performance on an important team project, but you sense a reluctance from that person to offer an opinion. You can always ask another person who is more receptive to the question, or consider how you are asking it and try again. Because people don’t normally go around asking others for opinions on how well they are doing, it’s not a question typically heard. So be prepared to ask over and over again before you hear a clear–useful–answer.

4) Ask Creatively
Everyone is busy these days keeping up with life and To Dos. Asking someone to stop and evaluate you can seem awkward or time-consuming. Your asking may get lost in the crowd, unheard by the people you hope to reach. There is a way around this. If you want someone’s attention, don’t ask the ordinary way. Use your creativity to dream up a high-impact presentation. Example: “If you wanted me to do one thing differently in our relationship, what would that be?” Find right time to ask the question.

5) Ask Sincerely
When you really need help, people will respond. Sincerity means dropping the image facade and showing a willingness to be vulnerable. Tell it the way it is, lumps and all. Don’t worry if your presentation isn’t perfect; ask from your heart. Keep it simple and people will open up to you.

If you own your own business or have a lead role at work in dealing with customers, the how-am-I-doing question can go a long way in bringing you priceless information. And don’t for a minute think that this is only a question for Customer Service. Asking for feedback is critical regardless of one’s position. How do you really know if your product or service, for instance, is meeting your customers’ needs? Ask them, “How are we doing? What can we do to improve our service to you? Please share what you like or don’t like about our products.” Set up regular customer surveys that ask good questions and tough questions. It’s a powerful way to fine-tune your business–and all the relationship you forge in that business.

Think about taking an inventory of “how-am-I-doing” from various people in your life at least once a year. Make it an annual habit. I trust you’ll be surprised and delighted at what you discover about yourself in this process. And it will surely lead the way to higher, more satisfying levels of yourself.

This 400th anniversary celebration for the city of Santa Fe begins today at a park not far from our home. Sitting comfortably in our living room, I hear Native American drumming and chanting, ancient sounds that filled this little valley for thousands of years before the Spanish arrived on the scene.

Four hundred years ago they were bitter enemies. Today they join in celebration.

With all the unrest in the world, and in our country, it’s a good reminder of what is possible.

And we don’t have another 400 years to get it right.

Consciously creating your life is the ticket to success and satisfaction, and this can support you on the path.

Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event.

by Jim Rohn

Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. We do not fail overnight. Failure is the inevitable result of an accumulation of poor thinking and poor choices. To put it more simply, failure is nothing more than a few errors in judgment repeated every day.

Now why would someone make an error in judgment and then be so foolish as to repeat it every day? The answer is because he or she does not think that it matters.

On their own, our daily acts do not seem that important. A minor oversight, a poor decision, or a wasted hour generally doesn’t result in an instant and measurable impact. More often than not, we escape from any immediate consequences of our deeds.

If we have not bothered to read a single book in the past ninety days, this lack of discipline does not seem to have any immediate impact on our lives. And since nothing drastic happened to us after the first ninety days, we repeat this error in judgment for another ninety days, and on and on it goes. Why? Because it doesn’t seem to matter. And herein lies the great danger. Far worse than not reading the books is not even realizing that it matters!

Those who eat too many of the wrong foods are contributing to a future health problem, but the joy of the moment overshadows the consequence of the future. It does not seem to matter. Those who smoke too much or drink too much go on making these poor choices year after year after year… because it doesn’t seem to matter. But the pain and regret of these errors in judgment have only been delayed for a future time. Consequences are seldom instant; instead, they accumulate until the inevitable day of reckoning finally arrives and the price must be paid for our poor choices – choices that didn’t seem to matter.

Failure’s most dangerous attribute is its subtlety. In the short term those little errors don’t seem to make any difference. We do not seem to be failing. In fact, sometimes these accumulated errors in judgment occur throughout a period of great joy and prosperity in our lives. Since nothing terrible happens to us, since there are no instant consequences to capture our attention, we simply drift from one day to the next, repeating the errors, thinking the wrong thoughts, listening to the wrong voices and making the wrong choices. The sky did not fall in on us yesterday; therefore the act was probably harmless. Since it seemed to have no measurable consequence, it is probably safe to repeat.

But we must become better educated than that!

If at the end of the day when we made our first error in judgment the sky had fallen in on us, we undoubtedly would have taken immediate steps to ensure that the act would never be repeated again. Like the child who places his hand on a hot burner despite his parents’ warnings, we would have had an instantaneous experience accompanying our error in judgment.

Unfortunately, failure does not shout out its warnings as our parents once did. This is why it is imperative to refine our philosophy in order to be able to make better choices. With a powerful, personal philosophy guiding our every step, we become more aware of our errors in judgment and more aware that each error really does matter.

Now here is the great news. Just like the formula for failure, the formula for success is easy to follow: It’s a few simple disciplines practiced every day.

Now here is an interesting question worth pondering: How can we change the errors in the formula for failure into the disciplines required in the formula for success? The answer is by making the future an important part of our current philosophy.

Both success and failure involve future consequences, namely the inevitable rewards or unavoidable regrets resulting from past activities. If this is true, why don’t more people take time to ponder the future? The answer is simple: They are so caught up in the current moment that it doesn’t seem to matter. The problems and the rewards of today are so absorbing to some human beings that they never pause long enough to think about tomorrow.

But what if we did develop a new discipline to take just a few minutes every day to look a little further down the road? We would then be able to foresee the impending consequences of our current conduct. Armed with that valuable information, we would be able to take the necessary action to change our errors into new success-oriented disciplines. In other words, by disciplining ourselves to see the future in advance, we would be able to change our thinking, amend our errors and develop new habits to replace the old.

One of the exciting things about the formula for success – a few simple disciplines practiced every day – is that the results are almost immediate. As we voluntarily change daily errors into daily disciplines, we experience positive results in a very short period of time. When we change our diet, our health improves noticeably in just a few weeks. When we start exercising, we feel a new vitality almost immediately. When we begin reading, we experience a growing awareness and a new level of self-confidence. Whatever new discipline we begin to practice daily will produce exciting results that will drive us to become even better at developing new disciplines.

The real magic of new disciplines is that they will cause us to amend our thinking. If we were to start today to read the books, keep a journal, attend the classes, listen more and observe more, then today would be the first day of a new life leading to a better future. If we were to start today to try harder, and in every way make a conscious and consistent effort to change subtle and deadly errors into constructive and rewarding disciplines, we would never again settle for a life of existence — not once we have tasted the fruits of a life of substance!

It’s Sunday morning, and I am in the back of the The Experience workshop room finishing this message.

Along with a wonderful group of people from Santa Fe and around the country, we have our first-ever assistance dog in attendance (along with his person, of course). While the full name of this handsome Bernese Mountain Dog is Franz Schubert, he simply goes by Schubert, and he is such a wonderful addition. You can see Schubert’s photo below.

We’ve completed the morning meditation, and the group is writing about their experiences of yesterday, especially the processes of last evening.

If you’ve already taken The Experience, you know how powerful this morning’s sharing will be for them, when so many pieces of the puzzle come together. It is the day of major breakthroughs and transformation!

I wanted to share my excitement about today with you, and also offer you an opportunity. As you may know, we always offer special prices on all events while we are in the midst of one. Usually those specials are only available to those who are physically present.

I decided to make this time limited special available to everyone.

OK, now they are sharing in little groups, so I don’t have much time left before I’ll be up in front of the room.

Here’s the deal:

Between now and the end of tomorrow, Monday, you can take advantage of the same special pricing that the participants have available to them

It ends for everyone at Midnight on Monday, no exceptions.

I don’t have time here to describe all the events, that info is easily found on my website, www.ExperienceYourPower.com .

If you’ve never taken any programs we offer, The Experience is your first step. Full price is $475 and the special, even lower than the early enrollment discount, is $325.

After The Experience, The Intensive is your next big step. Full price is $895, and the special is $675.

Success Coaching is open to all, though most of my clients are Experience graduates, and I highly recommend it. Full price for twelve months of one on one coaching is normally $1995, and the special is $1495.

Here’s a twist on Independence Day …

Did you see the story in today’s paper about an elderly woman in Zurich who called the fire department in a panic because her TV was on fire?

Racing to the scene, the firefighters saw no flames, no smoke – in fact, no signs of fire at all.

Instead, they discovered she had her TV set tuned to a German channel that airs a constant image of a fireplace!

This woman’s great distress could have been alleviated in an instant with one click of the remote. If only she knew.

At first I chuckled at this story, and then it struck me how much we live our lives this way– we see (hear/feel) something, make an interpretation about what it means, and then live our lives out of it, without further examination, and frequently to our detriment.

From then on, we go along thinking we are thinking, when, in fact we are just reacting to that old decision, and there is no thinking anywhere in the picture.

Inside that bubble, it’s easy to feel limited, and as if we have no options. That is never really the case, but it can sure seem that way.

We may not love all the options, and the first step is to realize we have them.

Next time you find yourself feeling stuck, or like your TV (or hair) is on fire, here are a few handy hints for regaining your independence:

1. Stop and take a few deep breaths — that alone will alter your perspective.
2. Remember you are looking through the lens of your experience — it focuses your attention, but doesn’t give you the whole picture.
3. Question your own thinking — is it accurate, is it the most useful interpretation of the data?
4. If your current interpretation isn’t producing the results you want, what could you replace it with that is in greater alignment with your highest good?
5. Go for it!

Make it a safe and happy Independence Day!

Love,

Honey Ward

PS You will gain much more than these simple handy hints in any of the programs I offer. They are truly transformational!

PPS I realized I set up all those summer specials to expire on 7/5, instead of 7/4.
I’m on vacation and it’s a lot of trouble to change them all, so you have an extra day to save on The Experience, The Intensive, Success Coaching, and Vision 2010.

All the details are on my website www.ExperienceYourPower.com.

You know that even a good life feels ordinary after a while.

It’s time to break through to a more powerful way of living. You know you want to, and the price (and the time) will never be better.

The Experience, August 14-17 in Santa Fe
